Activities of Workers

Vidi Kamgar Kalyan Pratishthan
Our welfare initiatives for our bidi workers are undertaken by Vidi Kamgar Kalyan Pratishthan, an NGO devoted to the empowerment of the workers. Some of the key welfare schemes we have developed for our bidi workers through the Vidi Kamgar Kalyan Pratishthan include:

Help with Government schemes
VKKP organizes special programmes to educate the workers about various Government welfare schemes for the rural poor and facilitates documentation for our workers and their families to become eligible for the scores of Government run benefits schemes for the rural poor. VKKP also helps in submission of these forms to the concerned offices and does follow ups for speedy processing.

Some of the Government schemes for which help is provided are:

  • Reimbursement of entire expenditure for treatment of cancer, heart ailments, kidney transplantation
  • Financial assistance for purchase of spectacles, maternity benefit scheme, monetary compensation for Sterilization
  • Reservation of Beds in TB Hospitals / Sanatorium & Domiciliary treatment of TB patients
  • Providing treatment for mental diseases and leprosy
  • Group Insurance scheme
  • Financial assistance towards funeral expenses of  bidi worker
  • Financial assistance of Rs. 5000 to a widow worker for meeting the wedding expenses of their   daughters
  • Scholarships
  • Housing Scheme Group / individual

Vocational training
VKKP arranges vocational trainings to children of bidi workers who are dropouts. The objective is to make them independent and cater to the need of generating additional income for bidi workers families. Our vocational training has already made 150 children self-sufficient. This year 7 girls are starting their own Beauty-Parlors and 40 girls have already started tailoring work at their homes.
Education
Children of workers discontinue their education many times because they don’t have enough money for travelling to schools or staying in hostels for higher education. VKKP assists such children by reimbursing the entire bus fare and the actual hostel fees. Students are also given a food allowance of Rs. 500 per moth.
Health

VKKP organizes various medical camps where expert doctors examine our workers and free medicines are distributed. Patients with major illnesses are referred to specialists in the field and financial help is made available to such patients. We also invite specialist doctors or counsellors for AIDS awareness.
Help to the handicapped
VKKP arranges for examination by specialist doctors and getting certificates to the handicapped so that they can avail benefits of Government schemes for patients who can benefit from operations or equipments, VKKP provides financial help for entire treatment including operation & all hospital cost including travel & food.
Relief during natural disasters

VKKP helps workers in events of natural calamities like fire, earthquake, flood etc. The help is given in the form of buying domestic appliances & foodgrains.
Kanyadaan
VKKP treats workers as its family members and contributes towards the expenditure of daughter’s marriage. Every girl that gets married is given a wedding gift in worth Rs. 2500 in the form of a saree and domestic utensils. This activity has enhanced bonds of relationships with workers as well as their in-laws.
Adopt a mother, save a child (Mata Bal Sangopan Yojna)

Under this scheme we take care of women in their early pregnancy. We monitor all checkups and ensure the timely vaccinations of the mother and child during pregnancy and up to 1 year after delivery.
